Last-Minute Family Fun for This Weekend in Somerset County

Easy ways to squeeze in a little more summer fun before the weekend is over.

By Georgine La Serna August 7, 2026

Summer weekends are flying by, but there’s still plenty of time to make a few more memories close to home.

Here are a few easy ideas for families around Bridgewater, Bound Brook, Somerville and surrounding Somerset County communities.

1. Catch the final day of the Somerset County 4-H Fair
The fair wraps up today at North Branch Park in Bridgewater, with exhibits, hands-on activities, food and family-friendly entertainment. Admission and parking are free.

2. Have an outdoor art afternoon
Grab sidewalk chalk, watercolor paints or a sketchbook and head to a local park. Let the kids draw what they see, create nature-inspired art or make a giant chalk mural together.

3. Try a family STEAM challenge
Use craft sticks, paper cups, cardboard or recycled materials and challenge everyone to build the tallest tower or strongest bridge.

4. Plan an ice cream night
Sometimes the easiest summer memory is also the best one. Let the kids choose a local ice cream stop and turn it into a simple Friday-night outing.

5. Make something together
Tie-dye an old shirt, make slime, paint a canvas or pull out some clay. Kids often remember the messy projects the longest.
